One-day Philosophy Conference – Lund University

In cooperation with Lund Philosophical Society, the Department of Philosophy at Lund University announces a one-day conference followed by a panel discussion. All are welcome. Attendance is free, but spaces are limited. If you want to attend, please email cathrine.felix@fil.lu.se. A conference dinner will follow the panel discussion. Each talk will be 40 minutes, followed by 20 minutes discussion.

12:30: Welcome; coffee.

13:00-14:00: Ana Barandalla Ajona, University of Edinburgh: “Autonomy vs. valuing others: Some reflections on Kantian morality”. Commentator: Monica Roland, University of Oslo.

14:00-15-00: Christel Fricke, University of Oslo: “What we cannot do to each other: On forgiveness and moral vulnerability”. Commentator: Cathrine Felix, Lund University.

15:00-15:30: Coffee break.

15:30-16:30: Lindsey Porter, University of Sheffield: “You're nobody 'till somebody loves you, baby: A relational account of the moral significance of birth”. Commentator: Jules Holroyd, University of Cardiff.

16:30-17:30: Jennifer Saul, University of Sheffield: “Implicit bias, formal equality of opportunity and affirmative action”. Commentator: Laura Beeby, California State University at Fullerton.

18:00-19:30: Panel discussion on affirmative action, chaired by Elinor Mason, Edinburgh University; in cooperation with Lund Philosophical Society. Panelists: Jeanette Emt, Lund University; Lena Halldenius, Lund University; Jules Holroyd, University of Cardiff; Victoria Höög, Lund University.

The topic will be affirmative action in a wide sense, including forms of affirmative action and advantages and problems with affirmative action with respect to professional appointments, places in educational programs, and proper conduct both in the lecture room (e.g., paying special attention to women’s comments) and in writing (e.g., use of “she” or other alternatives in place of “he”).

The conference dinner follows.
