Dimensions of Measurement

A philosophical and historical conference on "Dimensions of Measurement" will take place March 14 to 16, 2013, in Bielefeld, Germany. Plenary speakers are Marcel Boumans, Hasok Chang, Nadine de Courtenay, Laura Dassow Walls, Michael Heidelberger, Martin Kusch, Luca Mari, Joel Michell, Mary Morgan, Simon Schaffer, and Eran Tal. The conference will explore aspects of measurement in the natural, engineering, social, and human sciences and from a variety of philosophical perspectives with Weberian, Foucauldian, logical empiricist, phenomenological, social constructivist and other traditions converging on questions of method, of standardization, of world-making in measurement.

RAZÕES E CAUSAS - Podem as razões subjacentes a uma ação ser as causas eficientes dessa ação?

Este ensaio propõe-se tentar responder à questão formulada no título, investigando filosoficamente o poder causal efectivo da razão prática para determinar a acção humana. Para alcançar esse objectivo, após algumas considerações introdutórias, que visam, de forma sucinta, esclarecer o sentido e alcance da questão, assim como situá-la polemicamente no contexto histórico-filosófico passado e presente, iremos proceder à formulação e análise crítica de alguns dos principais argumentos favoráveis tanto a uma resposta negativa como a uma resposta cética (ou agnóstica) e finalmente afirmativa para o problema, avaliando-se filosoficamente os prós e contras inerentes às três hipotéticas soluções, após o que se retirará uma conclusão final decorrente desse processo, a qual se pretende que constitua uma resposta tão plausível e racionalmente sustentada quanto possível ao problema fundamental.

Two PhD positions in History of Philosophy

Two PhD positions in History of Philosophy till 1800 are vacant at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas (IFIKK). The research training will be associated with the project History of Philosophy 600 BC-1800 AD: Research Training. Priority will be given to strong applicants in ancient philosophy. The appointment is for a period of 3 years and the doctoral thesis is expected to be completed within the given time frame. The person appointed will be affiliated with the Faculty's organized research training. The academic work must result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD. The successful candidate is expected to join the existing research milieu or network and contribute to its developement.
