Postdoctoral position in philosophy at NTNU


The Faculty of Humanities (HF), Department of Philosophy at NTNU invites candidates to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship position in philosophy. The postdoctoral position is related to the research project "Representationalism or anti-representationalism? Perspectives on intentionality from philosophy and cognitive science. " The project period is from 1/8/12 to 7/31/15. The project has received support from the Norwegian Research Council to increase collaboration between Norwegian philosophers, and raise the quality of produced work through workshops, seminars, research training courses and the like. Also renowned international scholars will participate in the project.


The project is led by Professor Jonathan Knowles (Department of Philosophy, NTNU). In addition to researchers from the Department of Philosophy at NTNU there will be participants from the other philosophy environments in Norway, especially Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo. The duties of the position are research (2/3) and administrative duties, including project implementation, organization of workshops/seminars, advertising of master scholarships, etc. (1/3). The latter will be performed in cooperation with the project leader. By mutual agreement, some the administrative work may be exchanged for supervision of master students.


The postdoctoral position has a duration of three years, of which two years go to research and one year to compulsory work (for which there will be signed a contract). The place of work will be Dragvoll Campus, NTNU, Trondheim. The position as postdoctoral fellow is a temporary position whose main goal is to  qualify its occupant for work in top academic positions in both the public and private sector. A completed doctorate is a necessary condition to be appointed in such position. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in philosophy with a specialization in one or more areas of philosophy of mind, epistemology, philosophy of language and/or philosophical foundation issues in cognitive science. The project for one’s own research work must be of relevance to the project description for the overall project.

The application must be accompanied by a project description (3-5 pages). This must be within the framework of the overall project description. Candidates must also provide a sample of their own work. This may be a chapter of their doctoral dissertation or an article. Good communication and networking skills are desirable. Candidates must be able to work both independently and to collaborate with others in the team. The assessment will emphasise personal suitabilty for the position and motivation to carry out the project successfully. In light of the project's overall objective of strengthening national Norwegian cooperation, it is desirable that the candidate can communicate in a Scandinavian language, or is motivated to acquire this ability during the project period.

The salary for the fellowship is set at Norwegian state salary, pay grade 57, gross NOK 456 100, - per year (2012). The application should include a covering letter summarizing relevant experience and education, as well as specifying tihe motivation for the application, as, complete curriculum vitae, references, and documentation of all academic degrees. It is a requirement that applicants  have successfully defended their doctoral thesis. The application must be accompanied by a project proposal (3-5 pages) which, along with a publication plan, will constitute the attachments to the postdoctoral agreement during the appointment. The application should also contain a chapter of a doctoral thesis or a paper (up to 30 pages), a list of relevant publications , CV, references and documentation of all academic degrees, as well as  a list over relevant publications.
