Two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships - GV11552




Salary: £25,854 or £27,427 - £29,099

The Faculty of Philosophy intends to appoint two Research Fellows,
each for two years from 1st October 2012. The posts arise from the
recent appointment of Professor Huw Price to the Bertrand Russell
Chair of Philosophy. One of the positions will be in Philosophy of
Physics and/or Foundations of Physics; this post has been created
thanks to the generosity of the Isaac Newton Trust. For the second
position, a research interest in pragmatic approaches to modality will
be a strong advantage, and suitable candidates are likely to have a
background in Pragmatism, Metaphysics, and/or Philosophy of Language.

The primary role of the Research Fellows will be to conduct their own
research, and candidates will be expected to provide evidence of
exceptional potential for research and publication at an international
level. (In most cases, candidates will not be competitive unless they
already have publications in leading journals.) The appointees will
also be expected to play a role in the development of research groups
in the fields in question, for example by working with Professor Price
and others on the organisation of conferences and seminars, and the
preparation of funding applications. Appointees will also have the
opportunity to deliver short courses of lectures or seminars in areas
related to their research interests.

The successful candidates will be expected to have submitted a PhD
thesis by 30th September 2012. If an appointee does not hold a PhD at
the start of the appointment, the lower salary range above (Research
Assistant) applies. Progression to the higher salary range (Research
Associate) would follow on award of the PhD.

publications), a two-page statement of research interests and future
research plans, a CHRIS 6 form (Parts I and III only), and a sample of
recent work not exceeding 8000 words.
