ArgLab Seminar: “Recent developments in argumentation theory” by Prof. Frans van Eemeren

5 September 2011 (Monday), 10.00-12.00, FCSH, (room to be confirmed)

Frans van Eemeren (Emeritus Professor of Speech Communication, Argumentation Theory and Rhetoric, University of Amsterdam) is one of the most prominent argumentation scholars today. Together with his colleagues at the University of Amsterdam (Rob Grootendorst, Peter Houtlosser) he developed the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation. The theory combines some crucial areas of inquiry into the study of language and rationality – philosophical pragmatics, critical rationalism, dialectical models of dispute, and rhetorical study of persuasive messages – to analyse and evaluate argumentative discourse in various context of communicative activity: from political debates to academic discourse.

The seminar will consist of a lecture in which recent issues in the study of argumentation, and pragma-dialectics in particular, will be introduced by Prof. van Eemeren (roughly 1 hr) and a question-reply session in which questions raised by the participants to the seminar will be discussed (1 hr). Any kind of doubts, problems and criticisms pertinent to the study of argumentation are strongly encouraged!
