DOCTORAL STUDENTSHIPS / NORTHERN INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHY, ABERDEEN

The Northern Institute of Philosophy (NIP) at the University of Aberdeen invites applications to TWO doctoral scholarships, tenable from September 2011. The successful applicants will undertake their PhD within NIP, an Institute dedicated to excellence in research in the core areas of analytic philosophy. At NIP, full-fledged participation in project research is a major additional training component within a regular UK-style PhD education. Directed by Professor Crispin Wright, the Institute holds principles of collaboration in research to be paramount, both within and across Institute projects. The successful candidates will be those who have an interest in one or more of the Institute’s current research projects: the AHRC funded project ‘Basic Knowledge’, ‘Truth and Paradox’, ‘Self Knowledge’ and, commencing in October 2011, the Marie Curie funded ‘The Many Kinds of Many: Pluralism about Properties’.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: The scholarships are tenable for up to 3 years (full-time) from September 2011, covering the cost of European fees (or the equivalent cost towards oversees fees) plus an annual stipend of £3K. (Additional income is likely to be available via undergraduate teaching.) Renewal of the scholarship each year is subject to satisfactory academic progress. Applicants should have, or be studying for, a Master’s degree in Philosophy.

APPLICATIONS: The closing date for applications is Friday 1st July 2011.
The following documents should be submitted: 500 word PhD proposal; a copy of your degree transcripts (or a transcript of your marks to date if you are currently completing a degree); a sample of written work of between 3-5000 words in length; CV; Two references (to be forwarded directly by referees before the submission date).

All application materials and references should be sent to Paula Sweeney (p.sweeney@abdn.ac.uk)
