Estudantes de graduação poderão enviar resumos, desde que sejam participantes de projetos (PIBIC, PIC, ENSINO, EXTENSÃO), com a inclusão do nome do professor-orientador, acrescentando a letra G após o seu nome para indicar que é aluno de Graduação, bem como a sigla da instituição de origem.

Estudantes de Pós-graduação devem colocar PG e sigla da instituição. O nome do orientador pode ser acrescentado, com esta observação entre parênteses.

Animal Cognition: Behavioral Studies and Theory Formation

Workshop and Call of Posters

Workshop: The workshop aims to discuss the recent developments in the growing field of investigating the cognitive abilities of animals. We intend to structure the presentations and discussions by focusing on five interconnected key questions: 1. What are the main principles to develop an adequate methodology to investigate animal cognition and how should we interpret the observations of animal behavior? 2. How can we integrate neuroscientific data on brain evolution with recent findings of cognition in corvids and primates? How do we have to modify the theories of cognitive evolution given these data? Does this influence our view of an anthropological borderline between humans and animals? 3. To what extent can we find symbolic understanding in animals? Since understanding symbolic and a recursive structure is one of the recent candidates for an anthropological borderline, one question for discussion is whether this is still marking a clear species difference. 4. The general analysis of animal behavior involves a debate between cognitivists and mere associationists: can we explain all abilities of animals by associative mechanisms while we have to explain the same ability in children by cognitive mechanisms? Does mere association even exist or is it cognition all the way down that we find in humans and animals?

Call of Posters: We invited poster presentation as part of our symposium and will financially support the presenters. Posters should be submitted in a completed format or to be described by an abstract of 700 words.

International Multidisciplinary Colloquium

L’objectif de ce colloque est d’opérer comme plateforme d’échange entre linguistes, philosophes et psychologues expérimentaux, travaillant sur les différents aspects de la distinction massif/comptable. Cette approche résolument interdisciplinaire est en effet nécessaire à l’appréhension de nouvelles problématiques qui émergent présentement dans ce domaine. Cette conférence multidisciplinaire aspire en particulier à faire avancer le débat scientifique, ainsi qu’en faire évoluer la méthodologie.

TEOREMA - Call for Papers: Dummett’s Legacy

During the second half of the twentieth century, Sir Michael Dummett, who died at the end of 2011, exercised a profound influence within the sphere of analytic philosophy and beyond. teorema invites the submission of papers on all aspects of his philosophy for a special issue to be published in 2013. Papers that attempt to sum up the significance of his philosophical legacy within the philosophy of language, philosophy of logic and philosophy of mathematics are particularly welcome, as are those which deal with his wider contribution to social issues such as racism and immigration. Articles must be written in English and should not exceed 6,000 words.

Call for Papers: Special issue on the philosophy of Ruth Barcan Marcus (1921-2012)

Theoria. An International Journal for Theory, History and Foundations of Science, published in San Sebastian (Spain), announces a call for papers on any aspect of the philosophy of Ruth Barcan Marcus. The special issue will be edited by Genoveva Martí and we expect to publish it in Spring 2013. The submission deadline is November 1st 2012. Submissions should not exceed 8,000 words including abstract, references and footnotes and they should be prepared for anonymous refereeing.  Send your paper as a regular submission through our editorial platform, indicating that you wish it to be considered for the special issue in the 'Letter to the editor' box.

The Faculty of Philosophy intends to appoint two Research Fellows,

each for two years from 1st October 2012. The posts arise from the

recent appointment of Professor Huw Price to the Bertrand Russell

Chair of Philosophy. One of the positions will be in Philosophy of

Physics and/or Foundations of Physics; this post has been created

thanks to the generosity of the Isaac Newton Trust. For the second

position, a research interest in pragmatic approaches to modality will

be a strong advantage, and suitable candidates are likely to have a

background in Pragmatism, Metaphysics, and/or Philosophy of Language.

A Call for Manuscripts: Current Trends in African Political Philosophy

Deadline for submission: January 30,2012

The journal Philosophia Africana is soliciting manuscripts for a special volume (14:1&2) on the theme of Current Trends in African Political Philosophy. What shape, form or direction (if any) has African Political philosophy taken since the pro-independence, anti-colonial discourses of such leaders as Nkrumah, Senghor and Nyerere? What are its dominant themes (If any)? What contributions have been made by those, such as female philosophers, that are not represented in Oruka's nationalist-ideological trend? What impact (if any) has the end of apartheid in South Africa made on the current discourse? Should the discourse be taking a particular direction? These are only some of the possible topics for relevant manuscripts.
