Senior Lecturer / Reader / Chair in Philosophy (University of Aberdeen - School of Divinity, History and Philosophy)

The School of Divinity, History and Philosophy continues to flourish as a centre of excellence in teaching and research in Philosophy and the School now looks to build further upon these achievements by recruiting an outstanding scholar into the post of Senior Lecturer / Reader / Chair in Philosophy. Candidates with specialist research and teaching interests in the history of early modern and modern European philosophy, the philosophy of science broadly construed, and/or the traditions of moral philosophy are particularly encouraged to apply. The post-holder will contribute to research and teaching leadership within the discipline, and will cultivate research links with other disciplines within the University. S/he will expand and strengthen the development of the School's provision of courses at both undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels in Philosophy, as well as providing supervision of research students as appropriate.

PhD Studentships: Oxford Brookes University

University Research Studentships in the Department of History, Philosophy and Religion Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences The Department of History, Philosophy and Religion, Oxford Brookes University is looking for strong candidates for two, three year, full-time PhD studentships. For successful candidates the home/EU fee will be paid by the University and students will receive an annual stipend of £7000 for three years beginning in 2012/13. The studentships are open to both home/EU and International students, but International applicants should be aware that they would need to fund the difference between the home/EU and International research degree fees each year for the duration of the award. The studentships are intended for candidates, who will pursue PhD research that falls within the following research areas (this list is not exclusive and applications in other research areas are also welcomed):

BRITISH SOCIETY FOR THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION 2012

The Society announces that it will be offering up to two scholarships for doctoral work in the philosophy of science at a UK university, subject to candidates of sufficient merit presenting themselves. The level of the award will be the same as that of AHRC funding and will cover fees and maintenance. Scholarships will be awarded for a period equal to the institutional norm for PhD study at the student's institution minus any time already spent on the PhD (i.e., up to 3 yrs at most UK institutions). [See note 1.] The BSPS award will not be made to anyone with another source of funding [though see note 2]. Applicants must have applied for other sources of funding for which they are eligible. The closing date for applications is midnight GMT Wednesday 21 March 2012. (It is intended that the outcome will be notified promptly thereafter.) Applicants are responsible for ensuring that complete applications, including references, arrive by the deadline. Applicants are therefore advised to give their referees and proposed supervisor clear notice of the deadline by which materials are required.

PhD in Philosophy: Grant available at the Institute of Philosophy II, Ruhr-University Bochum

At the Institute of Philosophy II of the Ruhr-University in Bochum a grant for a PhD student is offered under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Albert Newen (Philosophy). The grant is connected with a research project titled “Concept Formation in Humans and Animals”: The area of research is the Philosophy of Mind and Language. The dissertation should be developed on the basis of research questions such as the following:

-       What does it mean to possess concepts?
-       To which extent are concepts embodied?
-       Are different kinds of representation involved when contrasting everyday concepts (like ball, puppet) with abstract or scientific concepts (like justice, gen, atom)?
-       Concepts are building blocks of thoughts and they are expressed by linguistic terms: how can we adequately characterize singular thoughts?
-       Concepts are also used in belief ascriptions: how do we account for the subjective understanding versus the public understanding of concepts in belief ascriptions?
